Rio Grande turkeys live in Utah’s canyon lands, river bottom cottonwood groves, and agricultural valleys. They are a rangier longer legged bird than Merriam’s with copper and green iridescent tail feathers tipped in buff or tan. Do You Need a Draw Tag
General season turkey from May 4th through May 31st 2026 is over the counter for both subspecies. No draw required. Purchase a valid Utah hunting license and a general season turkey permit through the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources at wildlife.utah.gov.
The limited entry draw season ran April 11th through April 30th 2026 and required a draw permit. For next year’s limited entry season apply through the Utah DWR during the application window which typically runs mid March through late April with results announced in May.
The youth hunt runs May 1st through May 3rd 2026 for hunters 17 and under as of July 31st 2026.

Tips for a Successful Utah Spring Turkey Hunt
Be in position before first light. Whether you are hunting a Merriam’s roost on the Wasatch Plateau or a Rio Grande roost in a Moab cottonwood grove the birds pitch off at first light and if you are still walking in that moment has already passed.
Scout before the season opens. Merriam’s in mountain country are locatable by listening for gobbling at dusk. Rio Grandes in agricultural areas are visible feeding in fields at first and last light during pre-season drives. Both methods are legal and highly effective.
Call less than you think you need to. Beginning hunters almost universally over call. Soft and infrequent wins more often than loud and constant once a bird is in close.
Match your calling intensity to the bird. A fired up Merriam’s tom on the Wasatch Plateau in early May responds differently than a wary agricultural Rio Grande near Moab that has heard calls all spring. Read each individual bird and adjust accordingly.
Stay still when a bird is in range. Movement is the number one reason turkey hunters get busted at close range. Get your gun up while the bird is behind cover or has his head down and do not move again until you are on target.
